Foreign Language

Students interested in taking a foreign language other than the ones listed should see the guidance counselor.

 

FRENCH I

The first year of French focuses on vocabulary acquisition and self-expression. Poems, songs, films, and numerous websites and podcasts provide the much-needed exposure to the language to facilitate language acquisition.

 

*FRENCH II

Prerequisite: FRENCH I 

Second year French builds on the vocabulary and skills acquired in French I and continues to develop the confidence and language skills necessary to speak a second language.

 

*FRENCH III - HONORS

Prerequisite: 85 % in FRENCH II

In third year French, students put their language skills to use through role playing and short stories. Films, songs and poems are included to increase the students’ vocabulary base and speaking proficiency.

 

*FRENCH IV - HONORS

Prerequisite: FRENCH III - HONORS

In fourth year French, students continue to sharpen listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. They learn to express themselves using an expanding vocabulary; present, past, future and conditional verbs; articles; adjectives; and increasingly complex grammatical structures. Grammar is introduced and practiced with a variety of learning styles in mind. Throughout the course, students experience the culture, people, geographical locations, and histories of the French-speaking world.

 

SPANISH I

This course provides an introduction to the language and cultures of Spain and Latin America.  Students will develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to communicate about self, family and daily life, as well as basic survival needs. Students will also explore cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. Technology will have the potential to transform the classroom experience through reading material, videos and custom applications.

 

*SPANISH II

Prerequisite: SPANISH I

This course is a continuation of Spanish I. Students will learn the use of past tense structures and pronoun usage. They will continue to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills necessary to communicate about self, family, and daily life, as well as on abstract concepts such as feelings and emotions. Students will also explore cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. Technology will have the potential to transform the classroom experience through reading material, videos and custom applications.

 

*SPANISH III - HONORS

Prerequisite: 85 % in SPANISH II

Spanish III - Honors is a follow-up to Spanish II. Students will build upon vocabulary, review grammar and learn further subtleties of Spanish syntax and idiomatic expressions. This course is useful for learning grammatical concepts and terminology. Students will review present tense, past tense and subjunctive verb conjugation. They will develop communicative skills or techniques necessary for summarizing, paraphrasing, interpreting and narrating. They will practice writing, reading, speaking and listening skills. Students will develop greater comfort and fluency. Technology will have the potential to transform the classroom experience through reading material, videos and custom applications.

 

*ADVANCED PLACEMENT SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Develop your Spanish language skills and learn about the cultures in Spanish-speaking parts of the world. You’ll practice communicating in Spanish and study real-life materials such as newspaper articles, films, music, and books. ~College Board
